On Wednesday…January 23 2008…at 930 am CST…the National Weather Service (NWS) weather forecast office (WFO) in Nashville Tennessee officially changed the minor…moderate…and major flood stages for the Tennessee River at Perryville in Decatur County, TN. These changes are the result of survey work done by the National Weather Service for Decatur County and Perry County emergency management to better assist them in the event of a flood.

The NWS defines flood stage as the river level that begins to impact life and/or property…and river flood warnings are issued when the level is forecast to reach flood stage. Flood stage for this location will be set to 365 feet. At this level…there is substantial low land flooding of campgrounds and boat launch areas that may be a risk to public safety. Moderate flood stage will be set to 368 feet…and flood waters may inundate access roads and structures near the river. Major flood stage will be set to 375 feet…at which point there is widespread flooding of the Tennessee River and its adjacent tributaries. Evacuations and significant property losses can be expected to begin at this level.
