Earthquake in Illinois, felt locally.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred at 4:37am on April 18th near Bellmont, IL close to the Indiana border. The USGS received reports of people feeling the quake nearly 900 miles from the epicenter. People in buildings as far away as Boston, MA and Ontario Canada reported feeling the quake. According to Decatur County EMA Director Kevin Cagle, the 911 office received several calls regarding the earthquake and some reports of very minor damage, such as pictures falling off of walls. This earthquake occured in the Wabash Valley fault system, adjacent to the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Public Information Statement from the National Weather Service:

An earthquake has been felt weakly by many people around 4:40 am in the mid state area. No damage reported…just shaking for a few seconds. The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has indicated that an earthquake magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale was centered at 38.50 north…87.89 west or about 6 miles southeast of West Salem IL. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the warning center.

Record low temperature in Jackson.

A record low temperature of 28 degrees was set in Jackson on April 15, 2008.

This breaks the old record of 31 set in 1950.

Preliminary results from the Lawrence Co. and the Giles Co. tornado surveys

A National Weather Service survey team viewed damage from the tornado that hit Lawrence and Giles counties on Friday, April 11.

In Lawrence County…the tornado tracked from 4.2 miles northwest of Lawrenceburg to 7.8 miles northeast of Lawrenceburg from 1205 PM CDT to 1215 PM CDT, Friday April 11. The path length of the tornado was 10 miles with a path width of 100 yards. The tornado was rated a low end EF-3 on the enhanced f scale. EF-3 winds range from 136 to 165 mph. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted. Many homes had roof damage. A TVA electrical transmission tower was blown down.

In Giles County…the tornado tracked from 0.4 miles west northwest of Liberty Hill to 4.4 miles northeast of Liberty Hill. The path length of this tornado was 4.8 miles, with a path width of 100 yards. The tornado was rated a low end EF-3 on the enhanced f scale. Many homes had roof damage. A well built home was completely leveled at Liberty Hill. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted.

The tornado moved across northwest Giles County from 1220 PM CDT to 1224 PM CDT, Friday April 11.
