Our area saw some very strong thunderstorms on the evening of July 15th. The storms brought heavy rains, gusty winds and cloud to ground lightning. Numerous areas were flooded as a result of the sudden heavy rainfall, Parsons received 2.88″ of rain. The heaviest rain occurred in the Sugar Tree area of Decatur County and the Holladay area of Benton County. The National Weather Service estimates rainfall in those areas to be approx 8.50″. Law enforcement reported briefly seeing rotation in the clouds and a funnel trying to form over Parsons, but it dissipated.
WSMV-TV Channel 4 sent us these radar images of the storm.

This image is from the Channel 4 PinPoint 3D Storm Scan. An isolated funnel isn’t depicted because the circulation was surrounded by heavy rain and hail in the mid levels of the atmosphere, and the radar is unable to see below 10,000ft in our area due to our distance from the radar site.

This image shows base velocity data from the Memphis radar. Bright greens show strong wind toward Memphis. Bright reds show strong winds away from Memphis. The areas of bright green and bright red immediately adjacent to each other in the center of the image shows possible rotation.
Thank you to Meteorologist Dan Thomas and WSMV-TV Channel 4 for supplying the images.
